Even if you don’t have a blog, Twitter, in my opinion, is the best social network out there. It is fun, educational, and quite addicting. Let’s just hope they upgrade their servers, because if you already are a user, you know that they are down quite a bit.

The big news today is that Twitter was up for short period, before once again going down. So that was a little sarcastic, but news of Twitter being down simply isn’t news anymore. There has been another round (seemingly never ending now) of Twitter whinging but not enough discussion around the solution. Given that Twitter is so useless that even they don’t know what’s wrong with their own service, it’s time for someone to kill Twitter.

Free doesn’t mean “allowed to suck”, or stand for “acceptable downtime”. Free products like Gmail, Google, Twitter, Facebook or Friendfeed still have a value. What you’re not giving away in dollars (or in our case here, Euros), you’re giving away in data and attention.

Twitter’s value has nothing to do with the technology. Measuring uptime is an interesting nerd exercise, but Twitter’s value lies in how it stays out the way and allows people to easily connect so they can share their thoughts and, more importantly, explore their differences.

Scores of bloggers, lots of video blogging and 198 employees on Twitter help keep the company’s profile high and humanize the folks behind the shoe sales. Of all the different types of social media the company uses, none are as interesting as its use of Twitter. Twitter may sound cliche, but it’s not just about Twitter as one single service. Twitter is symbolic of rapid, short, synchronous and public conversations. Zappos has bitten off a big chunk of that paradigm.

Geeks are by far more influential than any other online contingency, except the big media. Geeks pass the puck from Twitter to blogs back to Twitter. Eventually it hits Techmeme, Saul Hansell at the Times takes notice and then the whole world knows.

Sex is not about just getting something from others. You have to give. In fact, giving can be just as good as “getting,” right? Twitter is like that (I’m going to uh… pump this analogy for all it’s worth). If you just show up and say “where’s all my opportunities at?” you might as well just stay off of Twitter. But if you go looking to give to others, you will have plenty of friends and you’ll grow your network.

For me, Twitter has of late become a faster and easier and more accessible way to let the news “come to me.” Churning through endless RSS feeds – spools of new product announcements from the likes of TechCrunch and Mashable, for instance – can at times be a chore, leeching away the excitement of discovery that leads me (and you) to hit the interwebs in the first place seeking out new treasure chests in the first place.

This is true of bloggers, of Twitter users, of Flickr users… everywhere you look, if someone is using Firefox, they’re way more likely to be using other power tools online. The reasoning: In order to use Firefox, you need to be confident enough to download and use a browser that wasn’t the default when you first turned on your computer.

That’s an empowering thing to do. It isolates you as a different kind of web user.

Facebook is the AOL for web 2.0. Sooner or later people are going to want their own Wall, and in my opinion this is exactly what Twitter is. Twitter is THE wall for people who want more from a wall.
